Barangay Guadalupe

Guadalupe is a small charming barangay geographically located an the southwestern portion of the municipality of Coron, Palawan. Strategically located nearest the poblacion, Guadalupe boasts of having land that is most condicive to the propagation of the buho , an ornamental and smaller variety of bamboo, which for generations have been used for the production of sawali (slit-bamboo mats) and sawali-based products.

Sawali Weaving

Sawali weaving has held its place in Barangay Guadalupe as the go-to livelihood of the community for generations. In the 1970's, sawali basketry was likewise introduced, showcasing the inherent talent of Guadalupe residents for weaving. Today, sawali weaving is as much an art as it is a tradition, mastered by the community over the years.

The Guadalupe Sawali Weavers Association (GUSAWA) is a community-based enterprise organization in the Municipality of Coron, Palawan. Established in September 2014, GUSAWA is an offshoot of a livelihood assistance provided by the International Labour Organization (ILO) through the Partnership of Philippine Support Agencies (PHILSSA) after the onslaught of Super Typhoon Haiyan.
